INTRODUCTION
Catheterisation is a commonly performed procedure in clinical practice
The Health professional needs an awareness of the anatomy and physiology of the urinary system

DEFINITION
Urinary catheterization is the insertion of a catheter into a patient's bladder. The catheter is used as a conduit to drain urine from the bladder into an attached bag or container

INDICATIONS

  1. Acute Urinary Retention
  2. Monitoring Urinary Output
  3. Bladder Outlet Obstruction
  4. Terminally ill patients
  5. Neurogenic Bladder
  6. Spinal Cord Injuries

CONTRAINDICATIONS

  1. Pelvic Fractures
  2. Urethral Stricture
  3. Recent Urethral or bladder surgery
  4. Uncooperative patients


MATERIALS REQUIRED

  1. Sterile Drapes & Gloves
  2. Antiseptic Solution
  3. Cotton Balls and Forceps
  4. Foleys Catheter
  5. 2O cc Syringe
  6. Distilled Water
  7. Viscous Lidocaine
  8. Non sterile gloves
  9. Catheter fixation device e.g. catheter strap
  10. Appropriate drainage device
  11. Specimen jar (if required)
  12. Personal protective equipments
  13. Kidney tray

 

SIZES OF URINARY CATHETER

 

METHODS OF CATHETERIZATION
1. IDENTIFY ANY EXTERNAL ABNORMALITIES
    - HYPOSPADIUS
    - INFLAMMATION
    - TRAUMA
    - SWELLING
2. CLEANSE AREA OF MEATUS WELL
3.INSTILE LUBRICANT (ANESTHETIC JELLY/FLUID)
   - MALE- INJECT 5-10CC RETROGRADE VIA MEATUS
   - FEMALE- PLACE JELLY ON CATHETER TIP
4.INSERT THE CATHETER GENTLY
5.INFLATION OF FOLEY BALOON
   - INJECT PRESCRIBED AMOUNT OF FLUID
   - INFLATE WITH CATHETER COMPLETELY IN BLADDER   
   - USE WATER FOR INFATE BALLOON
   - IF RESISTANCE TO FLOW CONSIDER CATHETER MAY BE KINKED
6. COLLECT A URINARY SPECIMEN

  1. Urinary Tract Infection
  2. Hematuria
  3. Creation of False Lumen
  4. Urethral Disruption
  5. Bladder Perforation
  6. Non Deflating Catheter Balloon
  7. Intraluminal Encrustation
  8. Blood Clots
  9. Periurethral Catheter Leakage
